Choosing the right subject and university

Some initial research will help you to find the right university and programme for you.

There are three main areas that you need to think about when you are comparing programmes. These are academic issues, personal factors, and the resources and support available.

Academic issues

Much depends on whether you have already a research topic in mind or an interest in a broad area. Often the more flexible you are in the topic you wish to study, the more likely it is that you can be offered a place.

The first step is to find out where the research that is of interest to you is conducted. This may initially appear daunting but a short literature search in your chosen area will help identify individuals who are working in areas close to your interests. Many institutions have databases that allow you to search for specific expertise. A useful starting point is www.expertiseireland.com, which provides a fast and effective gateway to the island’s knowledge base and is populated directly by the knowledge management systems of third level institutions in the Republic and Northern Ireland.

Certain institutions may be well known for a particular area of research so completing your studies at that institution may raise your profile and credibility on completion of your degree. While various institutions offer similar research opportunities, it is worth considering the expertise and credibility of staff members. Explore where their work has been published, if they are widely respected in your field of interest, and if they have an international profile.

Personal factors

Think about the advantages of different types of location, as living costs may impact on the viability of your chosen institution. Is there a location where you have friends or family connections? Would you prefer a big city experience or a smaller town? Are you dependant on available transport connections? Will there be opportunities to practice your sports, interests etc? Do you want to live on campus, and is this possible at the institution?

There are obvious advantages to staying in the same institution where you took your primary degree: convenience; familiarity with the campus, library and staff; staying within your comfort zone. However, it is often recommended that you choose a different institution for your postgraduate studies, particularly for a research degree. This will help you to expand your network of contacts and to gain from the experience of different experts in your field.

Resources and support

Course tuition fees will vary from place to place but some institutions may offer funding or financial assistance.

Check if there is separate working space for research students. Will you be working alone or as part of a research group? Is there any opportunity for you to work part time at the university to fund your studies?
